Month End – May accomplishments

Every accomplishment starts with a decision to try

– unknown

In amongst the daily grind we must not forget about our own personal accomplishments. So as I speedily arrive to the end of this month, what have I been up to?

Debut Novel – My Final Edits Done!

On Friday 15th May I finally completed the last edit on my book which got underway in July 2015. In essence, a story about two brothers who drove a family from London to India. A family they had never met before! I feel I have taken the book as far as I can, so now time to give it to the professionals to rip apart, join back up and see where it takes me. I’d like to thank everyone who been involved in reading, re-reading, advising, the journey became a little easier.
During the writing of this book we sadly lost one of the brothers a few years back, and while my writing dipped my motivation spurred on! A lot of this I owe to them both. Continue reading “Month End – May accomplishments”

Month End – April accomplishments

In amongst the daily grind we must not forget about our own personal accomplishments. So as I speedily arrive to the end of this month, what have I been up to?

Note: today’s post has superseded my weekly Friday one (what did I learn this week), this will be back!

Mum’s a ‘Super Solid’ person

OK so my accomplishment here is that I swam the fastest, got to island first, kept my head down for 9 months or so and was lucky enough to have me mum.  40 days ago mum started prayers at home for the well-being of everyone in the face of this pandemic. Over the weekend all the family connected online as mum finished off the last few stanzas. At the end she told us a story which exemplified power of prayers – the kids and adults alike, we loved this part. Mum’s super solid because she always finds a way to connect everyone, and it’s something she wants to do throughout the year now.

BETA reader feedback complete

As of last week all the feedback that I had received from my lovely BETA readers has now now been reflected into the next draft. Continue reading “Month End – April accomplishments”

Month End – March accomplishments

Every accomplishment starts with a decision to try

In amongst the daily grind we must not forget about our own personal accomplishments. So as I speedily arrive to the end of this month, what have I been up to?

Understand the global impact, at home

The Coronavirus, which came to global realisation after the New Year has swamped everything and anything. As countries started implementing their own lock down procedures, here in the UK it came into full force this month. It also meant schools around the country shut their doors, with only kids from key worker families attending. Regardless, this meant parents having to juggle things at home. But more important was ensuring kids mental health and well being was top of the agenda. So we devised a timetable, which while not plastered on a wall pans out as follows (only item 1 & 5 in that order):
(1) Morning exercise
(2) Homework/reading
(3) Garden play (depending on whether)
(4) Meditation
(5) Board games

Social media cut down = more writing

Beginning of March must have been the last time I posted anything on my personal Instagram account, or my comedy one to say the least. I haven’t logged in to check since then and for now I don’t think I will.
The turn of this year I was making good progress on final edits of my first book, and had it in my head that I needed to remain social media aware and hungry to spread the word. But the balance between keeping up to date with all those Insta updates, twitter feeds and writing can become blurred. In some cases it’s the social media that can start to take precedence. Since taking a break from my social media shenanigans I can say my writing has picked up. While I still need to get back to reviewing feedback from my beta readers to see what needs changing in the draft, my blog has benefited from my needed attention. Once my book is completely finished, at that point I will delve back into the world of spreading the word. If this has taught me anything, then it’s not to panic and don’t give into the concept of FOMO (fear of missing out) – look at what will work for you, as opposed to focusing too much on everyone else.

Keeping up the reading

This month I picked up a short novel by the famous author Paulo Coelho called Veronika Decides To Die. I read his best seller The Alchemist many years ago and really enjoyed.
You can read my review here.

The tail end of February I just finished reading Some Rain Must Fall – and Other Short Stories by Dutch-born writer Michel Faber. I didn’t include this in my February update but you can read the view here.

Blogging Community

Saving the best until last! While the reduction in social media time has resulted in me writing more often, majority of the credit goes to our Blogging Community. To the writers, their stories, their challenges, the conversations and the positivity is something I feel so proud to be part of. It’s daily practice for me now, for this time is so well spent. Thank you to each and every member for creating and maintaining our virtual relationships.

Beta Readers feedback

This month I received 4 chunks of feedback from my beta readers, 2 more pending which I expect in early March. Then I can start updating my current draft and engage with a copy editor for a final assessment.

To Self-Publish or not

Over the past few weeks I toiled with whether I should follow the #self-publish route. I follow that particular hashtag on Instagram and see so many wonderful stories. Closer to home a friend has self-published her first novel, you must check it out – Marriage Unarranged by Ritu Bhathal. [Well done again Ritu].
I made a list of independent self publishing companies in Kent and London, and when ready will float my book to them. I know there will be a mass of rejections coming my way but that won’t stop me from trying!

Keeping up the reading

I have remained persistent with my reading, finished the debut novel by Dawn French. You can read my review here.

Changing of my set of wheels

Last August my current car passed 11 years with me, what a journey we have had together. I used past tense because at the start of the year my mission was to change it. Last month I took some test drives but the price didn’t fit my budget, I was being honest with myself. This month has been much more positive and I am 99% sure my old friend and I will depart with something new taking its place.

Finding Beta Readers

Having completed my final edit end of December I put out a request for beta readers. I was super pleased to have a group of 6 people step forward. I eagerly await their feedback by the end of February.

Comprising a blurb

So I went about composing a blurb and had two attempts at it. Attempt 1 and Attempt 2. As one kind reader pointed out I may actually devised an excerpt in the process.

Keeping up the reading

I promised myself to be more persistent on reading this year. So this month I managed to read a book I picked up at a charity event. Not a reader of crime as a genre but I enjoyed this short book, which is part of a series.

The author Robin Stevens travelled in the Orient Express to help with his writing
